The network at JBS was hacked, causing operations in Canada and the US to temporarily shut down, affecting thousands of workers.
This attack has the potential to take down multiple operations and cost companies a lot of money, the attack originated from Russia, said the White House.
Attacks like this can lead to shortages in meat which could lead to an increase in prices.
The White House says the FBI is investigating the attack.
“JBS notified [the White House] that the ransom demand came from a criminal organization likely based in Russia,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday.
“The White House is engaging directly with the Russian government on this matter and delivering the message that responsible states do not harbor ransomware criminals,” she added.
JBS said they will be fully operational by Wednesday and that they are working to prevent things like this from happening in the future.
