At 2 pm GMT, suspected members of a drug cartel arrived at the Chihuahua State Prison in armored vehicles and began shooting at the guards.
Ten guards were killed in addition to 4 prisoners, and 13 prisoners were injured. 24 inmates of various criminal backgrounds escaped.
As relatives gathered outside waiting for news, eye witnesses reported that the shooters were better armed than the police, shooting anyone that passed and were dressed in all black.
This attack along with the August 2021 riots further supports the underlying strength that cartels exert on the prison system.
The army and national guard are currently supporting the local police department with the aftermath of this tragedy.
