What to look out for in the new basketball season

By Adrian Salazar, Staff reporter, The Pawprint

Season 2 sports have just commenced and with that there are many new exciting players and games to look out for. Coaches Mr. Barnett and Mr. Bruan were both interviewed and they gave their input on what it is like to be a coach and what is coming in Season 2 sports.

Both of the coaches’ interviews were asked the same questions. The first question was asking if there were any new exciting prospects in the basketball team. Mr Barnett said that there was very exciting new talent but did not name any names. Mr Bruan shared that there was an exciting new 11th grade transfer and that many of the 9th and 10th graders look very promising and some of them even made varsity.

Another question was why are some students not getting better and what is the biggest thing holding them back. Mr. Barnett answered that many students just don’t want it enough. He argued that as a coach you can only do so much and that the actual desire to be great comes solely from the student. Many students want to be great but struggle because they don’t want to put in the work that a great player will. Mr Bruan said that players don’t form a plan and are not playing year-round. Players that plan out what they are going to do go very strong in training camps.

The final interview question I asked was what is the main thing that separates the good players from the great players. Mr Barnett responded that it is their attitude on the court, if they can be a leader and motivate the team, They need to be strong both offensively and on the defense, and they cannot be a one dimensional player. Mr Bruan argued that some of the key factors that separate these players are their mental toughness, the ability to stay motivated, and practice consistently. Players that put in the effort and practice always have the advantage over a physically gifted player with little rigor. The “Mamba Mentality” is key.

All in all there is plenty to be excited about for this new basketball season. There are many new players that display brilliant potential and the coaches express their opinions on how to separate from the crowd and become a great and with enough effort maybe even a G.O.A.T.
