Alphonso Davies quickly broke Canada’s scoreless streak at the men’s World Cup on Sunday, but Canada was unable to hold off Croatia and lost 4-1, ending its hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Canadians will carry a prized possession (the first World Cup goal in the 98-year history of the men’s program) and the knowledge that they played ambitious soccer with them even though they lost. They scored the tournament’s quickest goal against Croatia in just 67 seconds, four days after startling second-ranked Belgium.
“I am disappointed in the result. It was not easy,” said Davies. “We did our best, we fought the entire game.” Meanwhile the Croatian team has been doing really good in the past couple tournaments, reaching the finals of the previous World Cup in Russia.
