Max Verstappen had the race under control until a mistake during his final pit stop allowed Hamilton to take the lead and placed the Red Bull driver behind Charles Leclerc from Ferrari. During a difficult season for the team, Hamilton and Mercedes had a chance to snap their winless streak because of the pit issue.
Verstappen drew up to and past Hamilton with six laps remaining, leaving the seven-time champion helpless against the Red Bull’s impressive straight-line speed. However, the new world champion’s pace was simply too much.
Verstappen’s 13th victory this year gave Red Bull the constructors’ championship for the first time since 2013 and tied the record for victories in a season before held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. Verstappen dedicated the victory to the team’s late co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz, who passed away on Saturday.
