What to Expect in the New Movie, ‘Elvis’

“Elvis Presley”, when people hear this name, their minds shift to the King of Rock n Roll dressed up in ridiculous jumpsuits and cape costumes on stage. The movie Elvis revolves around the phenomenal singer who was betrayed by the music industry, and the people around him. The new Elvis movie, that came out on June 23, 2022, has been an unbelievable hit with a 12 minute standing ovation in Cannes. Baz Lurhmann, the director of the biopic musical Elvis, did an extraordinary job on “Elvis”. Although it was hard to gather Elvis’s 42 years career in 3 hours, he was able to capture the moments that really reflected on who Elvis was as an individual, a singer, and an inspiration to the world.

The movie starts off with Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) throughout his childhood and goes from a regular little boy in Tupelo, Memphis to a worldwide star. Throughout the 20 years of his fame, he had a hard and demanding relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Parker). Colonel Tom Parker had been manipulating and taking advantage of Elvis and his money to pay off his debts. Despite the money and fame, Elvis Presley went on a military trip to Germany, where he met his future wife, Priscilla soon gave birth to their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Sadly, after a while, it all took a turn for the worst when Elvis started working for unbelievable hours. To overcome the demanding hours, Elvis resorted to medication as a means of helping him sleep and receive energy. The pills quickly ruined him and caused him to lose his family. During the last years of his life, he kept on working like a muppet, blindly deepening his manager’s pockets. Moreover, he was not able to travel out of the country, even though that was his dream, due to his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, not having a passport. Elvis Presley died at the age of 42 years. The somber end of the movie, and his life, shows people that Elvis affected so many people, especially his fans.

In conclusion, the movie is a great cinematic experience that makes one feel like they were a part of Elvis’s journey, especially due to Austin Butler, who played and devoted 2 years to his role. Elvis’s music was incorporated into the movie and really brought Elvis back to the new generation. Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie Presley approved of this movie, Priscilla stated that: “It was very emotional, my daughter [Lisa Marie Presley] felt the same way”, “Only because he got Elvis to a T, I mean to a T. It is unbelievable what this kid did, Austin Butler.” Although the movie is lengthy, it is worthwhile.
