English Football’s Tribute to The Queen

Krishna Kosaraju, Sports Reporter, The Pawprint

Football came to a halt this weekend, but tributes to the Queen, who died at the age of 96, have not. The Queen’s presence and influence was a golden thread flowing through sport, and as a gesture of respect, all Premier League and EFL fixtures were postponed this weekend. The National League football games have also been postponed out of respect. The Women’s Super League matches scheduled for this weekend were also postponed as English football pays homage.

In a statement released by the Premier League, they stated “To honor her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.” The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey on Monday, September 19, at 11 a.m. When and how football resumes is dependent on this date.

Lastly, the FA has announced that tributes would be given before the UEFA Nations League match between England and Germany on September 26 at Wembley, including a period of silence before kick-off and the wearing of black armbands.
