The judge deemed the mandate “unlawful,” claiming that the national public health agency surpassed its legal authority by putting the mandate in place.
Judge Mizelle’s order officially makes masks optional in all airports, trains, taxis and transport hubs.
This was ordered less than one week after the mandate was extended to May 3 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC.)
Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, named the order as “disappointing,” recommending that citizens continue on covering their noses and mouths.
Many on social media reported the order announcement on a plane mid-flight, with passengers removing masks and applauding.
The federal mask mandate for public transport, put into place by American President Joe Biden, was discarded by Federal Judge Mizelle in Florida.
