EU prevents air travel from Russia

By: Ryan Oswald, Staff Reporter, The Pawprint

The EU has banned flights on Russian planes. “We are shutting down EU airspace for Russian-owned, Russian-registered or Russian-controlled aircraft,” says Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission.

All planes fallen under Russian names are unable to land in, take off from, or fly over any EU country.

Before the overall decision, many European countries had been closing their airports one after another. Germany is planning to have their ban last for 3 months.

Russia’s airlines say they are canceling flights to Europe until mid-March.

The flight restrictions are causing pilots to be extra careful in choosing their right travel path, resulting in longer flight times. Commercial airlines are avoiding space around Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.

The UK’s ban on Russian flights led to Russia retaliating and banning UK flights.
