Record breaking deforestation in the Amazon

By: Ryan Oswald, Staff Reporter, The Pawprint

The number of trees that were cut down in the Amazon forest in January exceeded the amount for the same month a year ago. The area that was deforested was five times larger than 2021.

Environmentalists blame Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro for allowing the deforestation to continue, as protecting the Amazon is a huge step in preventing climate change.

At COP26, more than 100 countries vowed to stop deforestation.

Greenpeace Brazil have called on supermarkets in the UK and everywhere else to drop suppliers that are involved in deforestation.

Following his appearance at the COP26 conference, Mr. Bolsonaro was one of the world leaders that vowed to stop deforestation by the end of the decade.
