On January 1, airport officers in Mauritius found an abandoned newborn baby in the trash of a plane’s bathroom.
The baby was noticed whilst the officers scanned the plane for a routine customs check after the plane had landed in the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.
The newborn was quickly sent to a public hospital, where he is said to be doing well.
A 20-year-old woman was arrested on the plane on suspicion of being the child’s mother. She denied the charge but medical examinations proved that she had just given birth.
The police claim that the Malagasy woman landed in Mauritius on a two-year work permit.
She is now at the hospital and under police surveillance.
The police confirmed that once she leaves the hospital, the woman will be questioned and would face charges for the abandonment of her newborn.
