Footage revealed a red SUV drive directly through a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin yesterday evening.
The crash left five people dead and over forty injured. Chief of police Dan Thompson claimed that dozens of people were hit, including children.
One suspect has been taken into custody who appeared to be fleeing the scene, however an official said that the act does not appear to be one of terrorism.
“Then we heard a loud bang, and just deafening cries and screams from people who were struck by the vehicle,” local resident Angelito Tenorio said.
The fire department took 11 adults and 12 children to hospitals closeby after the incident, said fire chief Steven Howard.
This annual parade usually includes 72,000 people. It is held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving and is celebrated with dancers, marching bands, and formal attire. The theme of this year was “comfort and joy.”
The mayor, Shawn Reilly, said that the crash was a “traumatic” moment for the city of Waukesha, and that his “heart goes out to all those affected by this senseless act.”
