China and India Breaking Their COP 26 Agreement
It comes after the two countries sought for the coal terminology in the Glasgow agreement to be changed from “phase out” to “phase down.”
Mr. Sharma, on the other hand, claimed that the “historic” agreement “keeps 1.5C within reach.”
It’s the first time a climate agreement has specifically stated that coal, the worst fossil fuel for greenhouse gas emissions, will be phased out.
The summit, which was supposed to end on Friday, had to stretch into overtime until a compromise was reached late Saturday, thanks to India’s late intervention to soften the language on coal.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will join Mr. Sharma at a Downing Street press conference later on Sunday to discuss the conclusion of the climate summit.
