Officials say a drone filled with explosives was sent to his apartment in the capital’s Green Zone in an apparent assassination attempt.
Mr al-Kadhimi was reportedly brought to the hospital, according to media sources.
He urged “calm and restraint from everyone, for the benefit of Iraq” in a tweet.
At least six members of the prime minister’s security detail were hurt, according to officials.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place in an area of the city where numerous government buildings and international embassies are located.
The incident has been criticized by the United States, which has offered its support in the probe.
In a statement, US State Department spokesman Ned Price stated, “This apparent act of terrorism, which we strongly condemn, was intended at the center of the Iraqi state.”
