By Tina Fares
Vinisha Umashankar, 14 years old, from Tamil Nadu, has found an alternative to the charcoal heated ironing vendors in India. She created a solar powered ironing cart.
In a tweet she posted, she stated that “The big problem I am trying to solve is to eliminate the practise of burning charcoal to heat an iron box for pressing clothes by the vendors. My innovation, the solar ironing cart will save trees, reduce air pollution, protect the environment and help stop climate change.”
According to Hindustan Times, the cart will run for six hours straight with five hours of sunlight. On the top of the cart, there is also a phone charging dock. Furthermore, it meets 13 of the 15 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations (SDG).
Her invention is nominated for the Earthshot Prize. Yesterday, on October 13th, 2021, she won her Esco-Oscars nomination.
