The World Health Organization celebrates World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October. The theme for this year’s event is ‘Mental Health in an unequal world’. Mental Health day gives us an opportunity to talk about what mental health is and how we maintain it.
So, what is mental health? As defined by the World Health Organization, it is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.
This seems a little heavy but to put it simply you have good mental health if you can cope with minor stressors and contribute to society. This can be difficult at times so here are a few techniques to maintain your mental health-:
- Spend time with loved ones
- Express emotions and not repress them
- Keep active
- Develop new skills
