An estimated 41 people have died in Indonesia due to a fire that broke out at a prison on the outskirts of Jakarta.
It started early on Wednesday morning, while most prisoners were still asleep. The prison block that was affected, Block C, housed 122 inmates, though it had a 40-person capacity. Multiple rooms in Block C were locked and could not be opened as the fire spread. The block housed inmates held for drug-related offenses
Dozens more are reported to be injured, with some in ICU.
It is suspected that a short circuit was the cause of the fire, however, a spokesperson said this was yet to be confirmed.
There were only 15 guards on duty for the entire building, which housed 2,000 inmates. Much higher than the intended 600-person capacity.
