Italy comfortably defeated Turkey on Friday night at the Stadio Olimpico to get off the mark in Group A. It was the first time ever in Euro history that the first goal of the tournament was an own goal, scored by young Juventus center half, Merih Demiral. Shortly after, Ciro Immobile scored his inevitable first goal of the tournament, as Italy were all over Turkey. In the 79th minute, Lorenzo Insigne curled one past the turkish goalkeeper into the bottom right corner.
It was a perfect first night for Italy, and the worst possible reaction from the Turks. Both these teams have been considered as the ‘dark horses’, however, there was a huge contrast in quality and performance in this match up.
Turkey will look to bounce back against Wales — who made a late comeback to salvage a point against Switzerland. The Swiss will also look for a better reaction from their side against Italy in Rome.
