The Philippines’ foreign minister, Teodoro Locsin, demanded that China’s vessel leave the disputed waters of the South China Sea. “China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me see… O… GET THE F**K OUT”. He then goes on to compare the country to an, “ugly oaf forcing your attentions on a handsome guy”.
Locsin is known for having what several news outlets have called outbursts online, and it follows the protests in Manila due to the presence of hundreds of Chinese vessels inside the Philippines 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Under the UNCLOS, the Philippines EEZ was introduced in order to avoid conflict over fishing rights. Chinese officials have previously said they were simply just fishing boats taking refuge from rough seas.
Soon after his rant, President Rodrigo Duterte said on national television that, “China remains our benefactor and … just because we have a conflict with China does not mean to say that we have to be rude and disrespectful. As a matter of fact, we have many things to thank China for – both its help in the past and its aid today.”
Although the President did not mention Locsin by name, his spokesperson confirmed that his message was directed at the foreign secretary. Locsin has now apologized through the Chinese Ambassador and also again on Twitter.
