West Ham – Lingard (15’) , Bowen (17’) , Soucek (32’).
Arsenal – Soucek (OG 38’) , Dawson (OG 61’) , Lacazette (82’)
Arsenal were able to complete a 3-3 comeback against 5th place West Ham. The Gunners had to overcome a 3 goal deficit, and came to many people’s surprise that they were able to show character and fight to earn a point from the fixture before the international break. West Ham ran over Arsenal for the first 35 minutes, however after taking a cautious approach combined with a desperately dangerous Arsenal attack, it was the hammers game to lose.
“We didn’t respect the game-plan from the coach and we conceded goals.”
- Alex Lacazette’s admission in the post match interview
The honesty is admirable however is also worrying as Arsenal need to be switched on for every game to stop this horrific league campaign. The second goal scored by West ham came 90 seconds after the first, where Arsenal players completely switched off and West ham took advantage of a quickly taken free kick.
Despite this, disappointed Mikel Arteta will also admire the heart his men showed to level the game from the dominance West Ham had after 3-0. Eye-catching performances by Callum Chambers, Alex Lacazette, and Loanee Martin Ødegaard, who is starting to become a fan favorite in the North London club. Arsenal host Liverpool right after the international break, they will look to take advantage of a low confidence Liverpool side.
As for West Ham, it’s always very hard to swallow throwing a 3-0 lead. West Ham were cruising for the majority of the first half, Arsenal had no possession whatsoever and were being dominated in all parts of the pitch. Jesse Lingard continued his fine run of form with a thunderstrike of a half volley just outside the penalty box, a perfect way to make his entry into the England squad after his deserved selection for the current international duty.
West Ham wouldn’t be too worried with this result, given their league position. The overachievers will evaluate this international break and try to finish this season’s campaign strong and keep their position in 5th.
