This Year’s Sweetest Treat

 Show someone you love them with this heart shaped red velvet Valentine’s Day cake!

To make the cake itself, you’ll need:

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoon red food coloring

The cake itself is very simple, just follow the steps below! 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F (175 ° C)
  2. Line an 8” circle cake pan and an 8” square cake pan with parchment paper and grease them both with cooking spray.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the sugar and the butter until they create a fluffy mixture, and add the eggs one at a time, making sure to beat the batter after every egg added, then add the vanilla extract
  4. In another large bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt.
  5. Add half of the dry ingredients that you just mixed to the wet ingredients (butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla) and beat them until they are only just combined. Then, mix the buttermilk, vinegar, and red food coloring and mix until fully combined, and then add the remaining dry ingredients and combine.
  6. Divide the batter between the two cake pans and bake them for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

For the cream cheese frosting, you will need:

  • 1 block (225 grams) softened cream cheese
  • 4 tablespoon softened butter
  • 4 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • One pinch kosher salt
  • Colorful sprinkles, for serving (optional) 

Create the frosting while the cakes are baking by:

  1. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and the butter until they create a smooth mixture.
  2. Add the powdered sugar and beat until it becomes light and fluffy, then add the vanilla and salt and mix until combined

Put everything together!

  1. After the cakes have cooled, cut the round cake in half as precisely as possible and place the pieces adjacent to the square cake, like so:

  1.  Then, frost it entirely with the cream cheese frosting and decorate with sprinkles if desired
