Going to college may seem terrifying for many high school students. But a new documentary series, “A Year of Firsts”, from former First Lady Michelle Obama aims to give a different perspective of the college. It will follow four college freshmen from across the United States as they try to adjust to college life.
The TV show helps to show students what that first year of higher education actually looks like: the good, the bad and the ugly. These include the ups and downs in financial issues, academic stress, physical and mental health, and, of course, relationships.
This major project will run on Instagram’s IGTV video platform and it is aimed at inspiring young people to plan for college by recording the experiences of first-year students. This series will meet many students where they live, on Instagram, and share an honest perspective about how to overcome barriers and various issues related to college life. The show will run for six episodes and end in June.
“A Year of Firsts” is produced by ATTN: in partnership with “Reach Higher”, the organization founded by Mrs. Obama during her time at the White House to inspire and support students to pursue higher education. “Reach Higher” is now part of Common App, an undergraduate college admission application that helps to simplify the college admissions process.
“As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to take that leap and pursue your educational dreams,” said Obama in an official statement. “That’s why I’m so proud of these students. By sharing their stories, they’re helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through—and they’re creating a supportive community for others facing similar challenges,” states Michelle Obama on her Instagram page.
However, this isn’t Obama’s first post-presidency project. Last year, her highly anticipated memoir, “Becoming”, was released. She also secured a production deal with Netflix alongside her husband, former President Barack Obama. The first result from that deal was “American Factory”, a documentary focusing on a Chinese-owned factory in Ohio.
