Atletico Madrid’s hopes of getting back into the Spanish title race is slowly disappearing after a shocking defeat against Eibar 2-0 yesterday night at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium. The Basque team, who have the smallest stadium in La Liga, scored in the 10th minute after Esteban Burgos scored a goal from close range at the far post after Atletico’s defender failed to defend a corner.
Atletico, who lost the Spanish Supercup final against Real Madrid last week on penalties, struggled the whole match due to not having captain Koke and defenders, Trippier and Jose Gimenez. Edu Exposito’s shot in the 90th minute sealed the game for Eibar.
Atletico are now third in La Liga with 30 points, five points behind Barcelona and 8 behind Spanish League leaders, Real Madrid.
