Would You Pay 1 Million Dollars for a Bag?

Belize Engström Staff reporter, The Pawprint

The Hermés birkin bag was created in 1984. The name of the bag comes from the Paris-based British actress Jane Birkin, the birkin bag’s muse.  It’s come about was purely a happy incident. Actress Jane Birkin and former chief executive of Hermés Jean-Louis Dumas were on the same flight from Paris to London, in the early 80’s. Jane was upgraded by Air France and ended up sitting next to the chief executive himself. When items spilled out of her bag, Dumas suggested that she should have a bag with pockets. Jane responded  “The day Hermès makes one with pockets I will have that.” He then said  “’But I am Hermès and I will put pockets in for you’.” Jane Birkin proposed that he should make a bag that is bigger than the Kelly bag but smaller than the Serge’s suitcase. He then asked what that might look like and Jane drew on what she recalls was a sickbag, a sketch of the bag she had in mind. Dumas then replied “I’ll make it for you.” And the rest is handbag history.

The Birkin bag is now one of the most or perhaps even the most exclusive hand you can own. The prices can range from around 3,200 AED to 165,200 AED, with the prices of the bags rising every year. The most expensive birkin bag was auctioned on Christie’s auction in Hong Kong for the insane amount of 1,103,103 AED. It was a the Matte Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Birkin 35 with 18k White Gold and Diamond Hardware. A lot of celebrities have been spotted carrying around these high status bags. It is rumoured that Victoria Beckham owns 100 birkin bags that sum to value of 8,448,360 AED. Kim Kardashian has even been spotted casually using her Ditto Kate Moss birkin bag as a gym bag.
