Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated in North America. This is a momentous occasion, a time where you gather around the table with the family and eat turkey. This holiday is about the blessing over harvest and giving thanks for the past year. Although Canadians and Americans celebrate the same holiday, it is celebrated in different ways.
How the Canadians celebrate thanksgiving:
The Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. They celebrate Thanksgiving earlier than Americans because the harvest season comes earlier in Canada. The main reason why Canadians celebrate thanksgiving is to thank God for their harvest. This holiday first started as a religious holiday and now is considered a very important weekend for Canada. Despite the fact that Thanksgiving is celebrated all over Canada, it is only considered a national holiday in some provinces. The government gives Canada a 3 day holiday; saturday-monday. A typical Canadian thanksgiving dinner usually consists of: Maple roast turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, rice, maple cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
How the Americans celebrate thanksgiving:
The Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday in November. The Americans celebrate thanksgiving to give thanks to all the things God has given us, and the kindness he gave to the native Americans. All over America thanksgiving is celebrated, being a national holiday. The government gives the USA a four day weekend; Thursday to Sunday. Thanksgiving is a bigger holiday in the USA than it is in Canada. In NYC they hold an annual Thanksgiving parade to celebrate the holiday, with hundreds of people watching in the streets. Surrounding Thanksgiving, the USA have Black Friday, a day where all stores give discounts. Black Friday is considered a part of thanksgiving because it is during the Thanksgiving weekend. A classic tradition for the Americans is to watch football during the day. Although Canadians have their own football league it is not associated with Thanksgiving as it is in America. The American’s typical Thanksgiving dinner consists of: Turkey, Cranberry sauce, vegetables, marshmallow mashed potatoes, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie.
What both countries do when celebrating thanksgiving:
Both Canada and America participate in the tradition of wishing with the wishbone. The wishbone is a bone in the turkey. After the meal is over, 2 people hold onto the other end of the wishbone. You make a wish and then pull the wishbone apart. There’s a superstition that the person who gets the bigger part of the wishbone will have their wish come true.
