Brazilian Football Celebration Ends in Chaos

Tarak Malhotra Staff Editor, The Pawprint

On the 24th of November, the Rio de Janeiro football team, Flamengo, beat fellow Brazilian team River Plate thanks to two late goals from Gabriel Barbosa. One goal came in the 89th minute, the other in the 92nd minute, giving Flamengo the 2-1 win late on.

Celebrations were underway in Rio as Flamengo toured through the streets for their victory parade. Towards the end of the tour, however, violence and chaos broke out. Stones and bottles were thrown at the police who had to resort to tear gas to control the crowd. What caused the violence is unclear, but reports say that a vehicle had turned off the main road, causing fans to break through the police cordon.
