On the 8th and 9th of May, the unexpected happened at the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Two English football teams and the underdogs of the semi-finals, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs were able to clinch their spot in the UEFA Champions League final that will take place in Madrid, Spain.

Both finalists struggled in the first leg of the semi-finals, as FC Barcelona scored 3 goals in Camp Nou against Liverpool, and Ajax scored a goal in White Hart Lane against Spurs. Fans were predicting an easy win for FC Barcelona and Ajax to secure their spot as finalists, however, Liverpool and Spurs had different ideas.

Liverpool left their fans in absolute shock when they were able to turn the game around in the second half with Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldium scoring 4 goals in total, making the aggregate score, 4-3 to Liverpool. Coach Jürgon Klopp was ecstatic with the players and how they played against the La Liga Santander title holders, FC Barcelona.

In the post-match interview, Klopp praised the players that were on the field of how strong their mentality had to be against Lionel Messi, the one that dominated in the first leg with 2 goals.

At first, even Klopp thought it was impossible as Mohammed Salah and Roberto Firminho were absent for the second leg. But, he knew that his players could do it and make it happen for the fans around the world, and they did the impossible, beating FC Barcelona 4-0. Within this victory, Klopp will be able to win 2 trophies this year, the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

On the other hand, the underdogs of the competition, Ajax was dominating the competition and out knocked last year’s Champions League winner, Real Madrid, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s current team, Juventus FC.

Tottenham Hotspur was going strong in the competition, as they defeated last year’s Premier League champions, Manchester City in the quarter-finals proving their worth. This marked the first time in history Tottenham qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League.

On the first leg, Ajax defeated the English side 1-0 with Donny von de Beek scoring in the 15th minute. Spurs coach, Mauricio Pochettino, believed that a comeback was possible and that they could defeat the Dutch giants. The first half of the second leg was dominated by Ajax, as they were able to score 2 goals, which led to Spurs losing hope for a comeback, however, that wasn’t the case.

Spurs forward, Lucas Moura, stepped up and was able to score 2 goals between the 54th and 59th minute. Spectators believed a comeback was impossible, but as the clock was ticking down at the 96th minute, Lucas Moura, to the surprise of the spectators, scored his 3rd goal to secure Spur’s spot in the final. The fans were ecstatic, a historic moment for Spurs and the first time they have progressed to a UEFA Champions League final. This proved how nothing is impossible to achieve in life.

With the two teams progressing to the finals, it is going to be an all English clash between Tottenham Spurs vs Liverpool, Mohammed Salah against Son Heung Min, Jürgen Klopp vs Mauricio Pochettino. Who will win the UEFA Champions League? Who knows, at this stage of football, anything can happen.
