With a score of 8/10 on IMDB and a US$50 million budget, The Wandering Earth is a major success for the Chinese film industry.
Set thousands of years from today, The Wandering Earth features an intriguing plot.
When the sun runs out of energy, humans have to move earth to a different solar system with giant thrusters. Fast forward 2500 years and people are still struggling to survive a fight from hundreds of generations earlier.
When the film first opened in China on 5 February 2019, within just one week it made US$405 million. This leads many people to speculate that it will become China’s most successful film ever.
Featuring many interesting fictional sceneries such as an abandoned area for “Shanghai 2044” Olympics, The Wandering Earth looks like a spectacular sci-fi film. If the Chinese film industry keeps producing films like this then, the western world might even tune in.
