Canadian Sentenced to Death in China

On Monday, a Canadian citizen, Robert Schellenberg, was sentenced to death for smuggling drugs. Mr. Schellenberg was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison, although his sentenced was revisited last week.

Many think that the death sentence comes as a response to the recent arrest of the Huawei CFO in Canada, albeit the Chinese government did not state that there was any correlation between the two incidents.

The Canadian Government already requested clemency for the Canadian citizen, while Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau called the decision ‘arbitrary’, and stated that the government would intercede in the process.
