Mexico Offers Migrant Caravan Temporary Work Permits

Mexico has offered to give migrants who register for asylum temporary work permits. The plan also includes temporary ID’s, schooling, housing, and medical care. To qualify, the migrants must stay in Southern Mexican states Chiapas and Oaxaca. “This plan is only for those who comply with Mexican laws,” said Mexican president Peña Nieto. “…it’s a first step towards a permanent solution for those who are granted refugee status in Mexico.”

Thousands of migrants, currently in the city of Arriaga, have declined the offer. Many fear taking advantage of the program will lead to deportation. Most migrants are adamant on making it to the US. Jose Santos, a migrant from Honduras, told the BBC Mexico is “calmer than it is at home”, but is set on making it to the US, “where it [life] would get better.”
