18 Killed in Taiwan Train Derailment

A train carrying 366 passengers derailed in Yilan County, Taiwan, on 21 October 2018. The accident killed at least 18 and injured 178, all eight train carriages derailing and five of those overturned. Taiwanese authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, but they suspect that the air pressure in the brake was too low to tolerate the speed of the train. “The train kept shaking and all the chairs were displaced,” said one of the passengers named Leong, “ I felt the speed was very high, and then the train derailed.” While not all passengers have been rescued yet, Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, ordered prosecutors and the military to ramp up rescue efforts and clarify the cause of the derailment.
