On Saturday (22 September), a Massoel Shipping vessel, MV Glarus, was attacked by pirates off the Nigerian coast, while carrying wheat from Lagos to Port Harcourt. The Pirates took 12 out of 19 crew members hostage.
According to Nigeria’s maritime agency, 7 of the captives are from the Philippines, with the rest coming from Slovenia, Romania, Ukraine, Croatia, and Bosnia. A spokesman for Massoel Shipping said that “The pirate gang boarded the Glarus by means of long ladders and cut the razor wire on the deck”. The Swiss shipping company stated that specialists are now en route to ensure a “speedy and safe release” of the hostages.
