First Cinema Opens in Saudi Arabia After 3 Decades

After 30 years – the first commercial movie theatre opened in King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh last Friday. According to the Khaleej Times, hundreds of people attended the screening of “Black Panther”. The public’s reaction to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s ongoing social and economic reforms have been positive and encouraging. The Minister of Culture of Information, Dr. Awwad Alawwad, stated that, “…the response has been overwhelming! This just goes to show how eager Saudis are to watch great films from around the world right here at home. They no longer have to travel outside the Kingdom to go to the movies.”

The KSA plans to open up three more screens by the end of 2018, and hopes to open 50 to 100 cinemas in 25 Saudi cities by 2030.
