Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been taken into police custody due to alleged irregularities relating to his 2007 presidential campaign funding. In 2013 police opened an investigation into his campaign that may have benefitted from the Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy has since denied any wrongdoing involving the scandal. One of Sarkozy’s previous allies and ministers Brice Hortefeux was questioned by police on Tuesday. Police then proceeded to take Sarkozy himself into custody for questioning. Currently, Sarkozy is being held under “Garde à vue” – custody, whereby Sarkozy can be detained by police for 48 hours for questioning before he may appear before a judge and face charges.
