Florida School Officer Defends His Actions

Scot Peterson, an officer of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, has defended his actions. On February 14, 2018, the school suffered an unexpected shooting which killed 17 people. Peterson was suspended by his boss, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, of failing to fulfill his duties of guarding the school, when he stayed outside of the school instead of going in when the shooting happened. His attorney, Joseph DiRuzzo said Peterson believed that the gunshots were coming from outside and followed his training of taking cover and prompting a lockdown. Yesterday, President Trump at the White House said “I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” He added that he found the officers’ actions “frankly, disgusting” that they failed to confront the suspect. On the other hand, DiRuzzo backed up Peterson’s actions, stating “The allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue.”
