Islamic scholar and TV analyst Tariq Ramadan was arrested in Paris and charged with rape on February 2, 2018. The arrest of the Oxford University professor followed the public claims of two women saying that he assaulted them in French hotel rooms in 2009 and 2012. According to Ramadan’s lawyer, he denied all charges and wrote in an October post on Facebook, stating that “Unfounded allegation can never take the place of concrete truth. These accusations are simply false, and betray all the ideals I have long strived for and believed in.” On the contrary, Henda Ayari, the first woman to accuse Ramadan of rape told Le Parisien newspaper, “He choked me so hard that I thought I was going to die.” Her testimony was followed by a second unidentified woman, revealing that Ramadan had a small scar on his groin, that would not have been noticed without a close contact. Rejecting her testimony, Ramadan is preparing for a trial facing Ayari in court.
