Violence ensues after elections in Honduras
A protestor has been killed in Saba, Honduras on 21 January 2018 amidst riots between the police and demonstrators opposing the results of the presidential elections.
Juan Orlando Hernández was declared the President of Honduras on 25 November 2017, despite mass protests prior to the election. Thousands of Hondurans took to the streets to convey their suspicion of electoral fraud by the official body responsible for counting ballots. The body was appointed by Congress – which is controlled by Hernández’s national party. According to BBC, Hernández has been serving as president since 2013, and is the first president to run for reelection after the Honduran supreme court lifted the ban on presidential re-election two years ago.
