Over 34,000 volunteers gathered to participate in a week-long “Clean Up the World” campaign to collect waste from different locations around Dubai. Dubai’s Municipality organized the campaign to collect waste from the desert, coasts and residential areas. Volunteers collected over 6,000 tonnes of waste in an effort to “develop positive behaviour towards the local environment and enhance social responsibility towards the country”, according to assistant director-general of the Environment and Public Health Services Sector Talib Julfar. Dubai generates the most waste per capita in the world, with the annual household waste per capita at 735 kilos. Taking into account that there are at least 5,160 homes in Dubai, the total household waste amounts to 37,926 tonnes per year.
