  1. What does Dubai mean? The name Dubai is originated from the proverb Daba Dubai, which means “they came with a lot of money”.
  2. The Burj Al Arab hotel uses enough gold to cover the Mona Lisa painting 46,265 times.
  3. The Falcon is the UAE’s national symbol and animal. Falconry is a big part of UAE culture.
  4. Over 12 million tourists visit the UAE per year; tourism now accounts for over 10% of the nation’s GDP.
  5. 25% of the world’s operational cranes are located in Dubai.
  6. More than 80% of Dubai’s population (about 1.5 million) is immigrants as well as tourists from different parts of the world. In fact, Emiratis make only 18% to 19% of the overall population. Another interesting fact is that nearly 100,000 new residents arrive here per year.
  7. The Dubai police fleet includes a Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley. This is to allow them to catch speeders who can outrun other cars.
  8. A city is currently being built in Dubai that will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology.
  9. Dubai is also known as the City of Gold, as it houses the Gold Souk which is the largest market for gold and jewelry, and the city also has ATMs that dispense gold bars.
  10. The UAE’s entire economy was originally built on pearl diving.
