The body of three year old Sherin Mathews was found in a ditch at the side of the road in Texas. According to her father, Wesley Mathews, he was punishing the child for not drinking her milk and made her stand outside in an alley behind their home in the middle of the night. He claims that he checked on the child after 15 minutes, but she was gone. Mathews maintains he was not worried about where she was and only reported her missing five hours later.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigation has discovered that on the day of Sherin’s disappearance, the family’s SUV pulled out of the driveway at 4 a.m. and returned one hour later. Mathews has already been charged with suspected child endangerment, but is now likely to be charged with injury to a child, which can put him in prison for five to 99 years.
Search dogs found the body on Sunday around half a mile from the Mathews’ home. Richardson Police Sergeant Kevin Perlich states, “It is most likely her”.
Sherin Mathews was a child adopted by the family from India. The family’s older biological child has been taken into custody by child protective services, and it is still unknown as to whether or not they will regain custody of the child.
