Mr. Tommy Buteau is a new English language literature teacher at Dubai American Academy. Mr. Buteau is from Colorado, United States and he has moved to Dubai from Malta where he taught for two years. The Pawprint interviewed Mr. Buteau to find out about his experience so far, as a teacher and his life in Dubai.
Why did you get into teaching?
I got into teaching when I realized that I like seeing people grow and change. You don’t get that in most professions.
Do you like Dubai so far? What about it?
I love Dubai. I can’t wait to have a little more free time to explore the city a bit.
What is your craziest teaching experience you have had so far?
I had students do a bookdrum site on Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. After it was published, I got a ‘Thank You’ email from Tim O’Brien who said he loved seeing what allusions and connections the students were making. My students loved hearing from a published author.
What do you enjoy doing?
I love hanging out with my kids. We just finished reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe together.
What do you like about DAA? Students?
Well, I am brand new, but so far I am very impressed by how smart the students here are. The Middle School and the elementary must be doing a great job. I also love the High School English Department. So many great teachers, and they are all helping me out with so many great lesson plans and advice about how things work.
What do you like most about teaching as a career?
I love having the chance to work at great places like DAA. I also love how creative teaching is. Every day is different, and you never know what will happen when you walk in the door in the morning.
