A red carpet, a heavy hail storm and popcorn are not three things you would often associate with each other, yet they come together perfectly to describe this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards that took place on May 7th. To break it down for you, this year the MTV Movie and TV Awards began on its well known red carpet and unexpectedly took a turn when made subject to heavy rain which was eventually followed by hail. But fear not, the night would continue to move forward and have a very memorable show.

As someone who sat at home and continuously refreshed her Instagram feed to get live updates of the event, I seem to have a pretty decent understanding of what the highlights of this year’s show was. Firstly, Adam DeVine, who hosted this years show, started off with a short Beauty and the Beast skit including fire, Rebel Wilson dressed as a teapot and dancing chandeliers (it’s a long story).
The night began with the first ever gender-neutral “Best Actor in a Movie” award which was given to Emma Watson for her role in Beauty and the Beast. She had a very strong speech and after bashing her own singing in the film, made some impactful points, such as when she stated “MTV’s move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone. But to me, it indicates that acting is about the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. And that doesn’t need to be separated into two different categories.”
The night ended with the extremely loved cast of 13 Reasons Why coming onstage to announce the award for “Best Show Of The Year”. Everyone was ecstatic to see the cast as it had just been announced the day before that the show would be renewed for a season 2.
Apart from this, they announced that the iconic show Stranger Things had won for “Best Show Of The Year”, making it even more of an unforgettable night for this show as Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the role of Eleven, won the award for “Best Actor in a TV Show” earlier in the night.
This award wrapped up the show and everyone was satisfied with this years nominees and winners (for the most part anyways). Everything only left us in excitement for next years award show as well as whatever else MTV is going to bring to the table in 2017. We can only wait and see!
