“I don’t know, can you?”
We’ve all heard this phrase at least once in our student lives, and we can all agree it can get pretty annoying. Why do some teachers openly let us use the bathroom and others never do? This question has been on our minds and bladders for a while now, so let’s get to the bottom of it.
“Needing to pee during class is more distracting than leaving and coming back. No one can be fully focused on the task at hand or what is being taught if they have to use the bathroom.”, said Sophomore Maya Cantagrel.
Here are some results from a school-wide survey:
“I let students go to the bathroom because I take their word for it that it is urgent. If they need to go, they need to go. I’d rather have them go and get focused than sit and try to hold it.”, said high school math teacher Raymond Wiens.
Another student, Sophomore Makeda Melkie said, “Teacher don’t realise that if we didn’t need to go, then we wouldn’t. Not being able to go feels really restrictive and takes away from the learning experience.”
As is clear, this is a school-wide epidemic that needs solving. Hopefully the insight and information we now have will help us all live more in harmony with each other, and our bladders.
